Description of photo
The photo of “Solna” was taken in the Stockholm subway system at the Solna centrum subway station. The photograph captures the station’s dramatic design. This intense red color creates a powerful visual impact for anyone entering the station.
The Stockholm subway system, often referred to as the “world’s longest art gallery,” is home to numerous art installations across its stations. Solna centrum, located on the Blue Line, is no exception. Opened to the public, this station quickly became a symbol of the concerns arising from the industrialization of Sweden in the 1970s.
Designed by artists Karl-Olov Björk and Anders Åberg, the station’s art doesn’t just stop at the forest and sky. Interspersed within the landscape are small vignettes, shedding light on various issues that emerged with Sweden’s industrial growth during the 1970s. These include 3-D models embedded in the platform walls, each telling a story of its own.
In essence, the art at Solna centrum is more than just a visual treat. It serves as a poignant reminder of the environmental and societal challenges faced during a transformative period in Sweden’s history. The station stands as a testament to Stockholm’s dedication to intertwining art with daily life, turning an ordinary commute into a thought-provoking journey.
