Along the I-5 North, this photo captures the majesty of Black Butte, an iconic landmark that stands proudly NorthWest of the scenic town of Mount Shasta. The photograph was taken on a pristine day—August 22, 2012. The sun was high in the sky, casting a bright light across the landscape, and it was around noon when the photograph was taken. Notably, the sky was cloudless, providing a clean backdrop that beautifully complemented the silhouette of Black Butte.
In the process of refining the image, certain modern distractions were edited out. Several bridges that crosses the I-5 in that vicinity were removed as well as some cars. This choice was intentional, meant to direct the viewer’s entire attention to Black Butte. By eliminating that, the photograph not only harks back to a simpler, undisturbed time but also accentuates the natural beauty and stark contrast of Black Butte against its surroundings. The resulting image is a blend of nature and artistic vision.
Black Butte is a collection of interlinked dacite lava domes situated as a satellite cone of Mount Shasta. Positioned near the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 between Mount Shasta and Weed, California, these domes emerged at the base of the Shastina cone roughly 9,000-10,000 years ago after its primary eruption phase.
