The photograph titled “County” was captured atop the prominent Kvarntorp pile in Kumla municipality, which rises to a height of around 100 meters. Shot facing North, the image presents a relaxing view of the surrounding forest. The moment was frozen in time on September 1, 2018, at 18:37 local time.
The kvarntorp pile signifies the highest elevation in the Närke plain, reaching 157 meters above sea level. The pile’s formation can be attributed to the remnants from the area’s oil shale extraction activities. Interestingly, parts of the pile still burn below ground today.
This endeavor became particularly crucial during World War II. With the pressures of the war limiting resources, Sweden made a concentrated effort to harness oil from the region’s abundant oil shale deposits, leading to the significant growth of the Kvarntorp pile. This historical connection makes it not only a geographical highlight but also a testament to Sweden’s resourcefulness during challenging times.
